Ottawa, Ontario

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Thai Pongal:

“This week, the Tamil community in Canada and around the world will celebrate Thai Pongal, the harvest festival.

“Thai Pongal is a time of joy, celebration, and community. Traditionally, families and friends gather to give thanks for a bountiful harvest and share Pongal, a sweet rice pudding. While festivities may look different again this year as we continue to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, I know Tamil Canadians will find ways to embody the core values of peace, unity, and compassion at the heart of the celebration of Thai Pongal.

“In January, we also mark Tamil Heritage Month in Canada. It is an opportunity for all Canadians to reflect on the rich history, resiliency, and strength of the Tamil community. It is also a time for us to recognize and celebrate the many contributions Tamil Canadians have made, and continue to make, to our country’s social, economic, and cultural fabric. Together, we will build a stronger, fairer, and more inclusive Canada.

“On behalf of our family, Sophie and I wish everyone celebrating Thai Pongal, here in Canada and around the world, a joyful festival.

“Iniya Thai Pongal Nalvazhthukkal.”

MPP Logan Kanapathi – January is Tamil Heritage Month

January is Tamil Heritage Month. Tamils have faced many challenges in this new promised land and have contributed to the growth of this great province and to the Nation. This month is important because we share our heritage and culture with our friends and neighbours and to teach the next generation of Tamil Canadians about our rich traditions, celebrations and values.
These last two years have been very difficult for all of us, but this year brings new hope and aspirations.
I wish everyone a Happy Tamil Heritage Month and Happy Thai Pongal

MPP Logan Kanapathi – Happy Thai Pongal

Happy Thai Pongal & Happy Tamil New Year to everyone.
Today marks the 10th anniversary of an historic achievement as Markham is the first municipality in Canada to officially recognize this most important festival for Tamils
As a MPP and former Councillor of Markham I’m proud of this initiative
January is a time of harvest for farmers in countries like India and SriLanka. Thai Pongal is a celebration that offers thanks to the sun and cattle for their assistance with a good season and ample harvest and celebrated by members of the Tamil community irrespective of their religion. Thai Pongal also marks the first fay of January as per the Tamil calendar which is calculated based on the birth of Thiruvalluvar, a celebrated poet and philosopher by Tamils all over the world.
I had worked on this proclamation for several years together with the support of number of active Markham Tamil Associations such as Cedarwood Tamil Rate Payers Association, Markham Tamil Seniors Associations, Markham Tamil Organizations to the Town’s Council requesting the days to be observed as Tamil Heritage Days.
On December 13, 2011 – During a regular council meeting at Markham Civic Centre, Markham Town Council proclaimed January 13, 14 and 15 as Tamil Heritage Days, thus becoming the first Municipality in Canada to recognize Tamil Heritage Days. The motion was initiated by me, seconded by Councillor Collin Campbell and Town Council unanimously passed the proclamation on December 13th 2011. I want to thank all the other Members of City of Markham Council for their unanimous support of this proclamation. I was delighted see that Tamil heritage month proclamation was passed by various level of government. In 2012 Tamil Heritage Month Act was passed by the Ontario government to proclaim January as Tamil heritage month. In 2016 Canadian (federal) Government declared the month of January as Tamil Heritage Month. I was delighted to see that the initiative as Tamil heritage day at the City of Markham reached the national level and now we celebrate January as Tamil Heritage Month

MPP Vijay Thanigasalam

A Happy Thai Pongal and Tamil New Year to all the Tamils that are celebrating this wonderful festival. This festival marks the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the Tamil calendar year. Thanks is given to nature, the Sun and farm cattle for providing grain and harvest.
அனைவருக்கும் இனிய
தைப்பொங்கல்
தமிழ்ப் புத்தாண்டு வாழ்த்துக்கள்!
Thai Pongal is also remarkable in showing how close the Tamils were to nature.
A special dish of Pongal is made on this day. You let this dish boil until it boils over the pot, in the belief that doing so will result in a bountiful year.
With the onset of a New Year, better pathways and beginnings will follow. “Thai piranthaal, vali pirakum.”
The Month of January is proclaimed as Tamil Heritage Month in the government of Canada, the Province of Ontario, major cities and school boards.
Though we may not be able to gather in person to celebrate this festive time. I hope you get to enjoy the day with your household members with sweet Pongal while welcoming peace and prosperity in your home.
Best wishes for a prosperous Thai Pongal and Tamil New Year festival.

Narendra Modi Prime Minister of India
