வட அமெரிக்காவில் தமிழறிஞர் ஜி.யு. போப் அவர்களுக்கான நினைவுச் சிலை
தமிழறிஞரான ஜி.யு. போப் அவர்கள், கனடாவின் பிறின்ஸ் எட்வார்ட் ஐலண்டில் பிறந்தார். அவரது பதின்ம வயதில் இங்கிலாந்தில் தமிழைக் கற்கத் தொடங்கினார். 1839ஆம் ஆண்டு தென்னிந்தியாவிற்குச் சென்றார். அங்கு தமிழைத் திறம்படக் கற்று, தமிழுலகம் போற்றும் அறிஞர்களுள் ஒருவரானார். திருக்குறள், திருவாசகம் ஆகியவற்றை ஆங்கில மொழியில் மொழி பெயர்த்த பெருமை இவருக்கு உண்டு. இவரது திருக்குறளுக்கான ஆங்கில மொழிபெயர்ப்பு இன்றும் போற்றுதற்குரியதாக உள்ளது. 1881ஆம் ஆண்டு இங்கிலாத்தில் சென்று குடியமர்ந்த பின்னும் தமிழ் விரிவுரையாளராக பணியாற்றினார்.
ஜி.யு. போப் அவர்கள் தமிழ் மொழிக்கு ஆற்றிய பணி அளப்பரியது. அதனை நினைவுகூரும் முகமாக, அவரது இருநூறாவது பிறந்தநாளை ஒட்டி, அவரது பிறப்பிடமான கனடாவின், பிரின்ஸ் எட்வார்ட் ஐலண்ட் மாநிலத்தின் பெடெஃக் என்ற இடத்திலே பத்து அடி நினைவுச் சிலை எழுப்புவதற்கான முயற்சியை உள்ளூர் வரலாற்று சமூகம், நகராட்சி மற்றும் மாகாண அரசு ஆகியவற்றின் ஆதரவில் கனடியத் தமிழர் பேரவை முன்னெடுத்துள்ளது.

George Uglow Pope, popularly known as G.U. Pope was born on the 24th of April 1820 in Bedeque, Prince Edward Island in Canada. G.U. Pope started studying Tamil as a teenager in England, and in 1839, he went to South India. He later turned into a scholar of Tamil. His most famous work is the English translation of the Thirukkural, completed in 1886. In 1881, Pope left India and settled in Oxford, England, where he made a mark as a lecturer in Tamil. G.U. Pope’s contributions to the Tamil language are extraordinary.
With the support of local historical society, Bedeque Area rural municipality and the PEI provincial government, the Canadian Tamil Congress (CTC) is committed to building a 10 feet monument for G.U. Pope at his birthplace – Bedeque, Prince Edward Island as part of the bicentenary birth celebration.
