பொங்கல் (Pongal) என்பது தமிழர்களால் சிறப்பாகக் கொண்டாடப்படும் ஓர் அறுவடைப் பண்டிகை ஆகும். இந்த விழா தென்னிந்தியா, இலங்கை, மலேசியா, சிங்கப்பூர், ஐரோப்பிய நாடுகள், வட அமெரிக்கா, தென் ஆப்பிரிக்கா, மொரிசியசு மற்றும் தமிழர் வாழும் அனைத்து நாடுகளிலும் கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது. பொங்கல், உழைக்கும் மக்கள் இயற்கைத் தெய்வமாகக் கருதப்படும் சூரியனுக்கும், மற்ற உயிர்களுக்கும் சொல்லும் ஒரு நன்றியறிதலாகக் கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது.

Statement by the Prime Minister on Thai Pongal

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Thai Pongal:
“Today, Tamil communities in Canada and around the world will mark the beginning of Thai Pongal, the harvest festival.
“Thai Pongal is a celebration of nature and community. Over four days, families and friends will come together to decorate their homes with colourful patterns, offer prayers, and share Pongal, a sweet dish made with rice and milk that symbolizes luck and optimism for the coming year.
“Canada is home to one of the largest Tamil communities in the world. As we mark Tamil Heritage Month this January, Thai Pongal is an opportunity for all of us to learn more about the history of the Tamil people, to celebrate their resilience and achievements, and to reflect on the strides and successes Tamil Canadians continue to make.
“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I wish everyone celebrating Thai Pongal a joyful festival.

Canada’s NDP leader Jagmeet Singh made the following statement:
“Today marks the beginning of Thai Pongal, a time when Tamils in Canada and all over the world will come together to celebrate the harvest festival. It’s also Tamil Heritage Month, when we celebrate and recognize the richness of the Tamil language, culture, and heritage.

“Today, Tamil communities across Ontario will gather to begin celebrating Thai Pongal, which marks the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the Tamil calendar year. It is a time of laughter and peace during which friends and family can come together and exchange gifts and well wishes.
January is Tamil Heritage Month in Ontario. Our province is home to one of the largest Tamil communities in the world and their contributions are appreciated across Ontario. Thai Pongal and Tamil Heritage Month are important reminders to reflect on and celebrate the many major contributions of the Tamil people to our great province.
