Statement from Ottawa Tamil Community Organizations in support of “Walk for Justice.”
The Ottawa Tamil Community Organizations stand united in supporting the Canadians walking over 400 km demanding justice for victims of enforced disappearances. They started their walk on the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, 30 August. However, long and challenging the journey would be, they are determined to deliver the petition they carry for our Honorable Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. We, the Ottawa Tamil Community, welcome the activists to Ottawa and overwhelmingly support this great cause.
The Office of the High Commissioner, United Nations Human Rights (OHCHR) stated in its 2015 report, “During and after the war, enforced disappearances were even used for purely economic extortion purposes by some State officials and affiliated paramilitaries. The extensive use of enforced disappearances, followed by an almost complete lack of judicial accountability and decisive and sustained efforts to secure the truth about the disappeared – including the determination of their fate or whereabouts – as well as the absence of a comprehensive reparation program and social, psychological and economic support for the relatives, have left profound wounds in society and a deep sense of mistrust among the relatives.”
OHCHR also concluded, “The victims of enforced disappearances have overall no faith in the justice system, prosecution services, the police or Armed Forces. The chronic pattern of impunity still exists in cases of enforced disappearance, and sufficient efforts now need to be made to determine the fate or whereabouts of persons who have disappeared, to punish those responsible and to guarantee the right to the truth and reparation.”
Even five years after the OHCHR report, the Eelam Tamil Community hasn’t seen any tangible actions by the Sri Lankan Government or by the International Community to deliver justice to the families of thousands who were forcefully made disappeared. Canada is home to the largest Eelam Tamil Community outside of Sri Lanka, and many citizens of Canada continue to live with the agony of not knowing what had happened to their loved ones.
Canada has decisively acted in Myanmar’s case to bring the plight of the Rohingya people to the attention of the international community.
However, the justice for Eelam Tamils is continuing to be denied even though a frustrating ten years have passed since the heinous genocide committed against the Eelam Tamils.
The Ottawa Tamil Organizations are supporting the Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE) and other Canadian Organizations for organizing the “Walk For Justice”.
In the name of principles proclaimed in the Charter of the United Nations and other international instruments, recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world, we the Ottawa Tamil Community strongly support the “Walk for Justice” and respectfully request the Candian Government to do everything possible under their power to find out the plight of thousands who are forced to disappear by the Sri Lankan State and help deliver justice and peace to thousands of mothers, wives and children and families of Eelam Tamils.
