Statement by the Prime Minister on Eid al-Fitr<br />April 20, 2023<br />Ottawa, Ontario<br />The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Eid al-Fitr:<br /><br />“On the first sighting of the new crescent moon, Muslims in Canada and around the world will celebrate Eid al-Fitr to mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan.<br /><br />“Eid al-Fitr, also known as the festival of breaking the fast, is one of the most important holidays in the Islamic faith. It is an opportunity for families and friends to spend quality time together, worship as a community, and give to charity. It is also a time to show generosity, gratitude, and compassion – core values that are at the heart of Islam.<br /><br />“On this day, we recognize the invaluable contributions Muslim communities in Canada have made, and continue to make, to this country. As a Canadian Tamil Organization with global presence, we are pleased to undertake this initiative to build a monument for G.U. Pope in recognition of his immense contributions to the Tamil language. We are also very proud that a Canadian by birth translated the Thirukkural to English in the 19th century. In this regard, CTC has leased the piece of land in which the house where G.U. Pope was born in Bedeque, PEI from the Government of Prince Edward Island. CTC has had discussions with the stakeholders including the three levels of government, G.U. Pope Family and the Bedeque Area Historical Society. We are also pleased to witness the emotional reactions of these institutions and people as we come together 200 years later to recognize a Canadian for his contribution right in his birth place. <br /><br />As a non-profit Tamil organization we rely on our community’s support to and the Anbudan Thamil Concert is a unique opportunity to collaborate with CTC and to show your support to this very important and historical effort for Tamil in North America. <br /><br />We look forward to your support by way of your participation in the 2023 Anbudan Thamil Concert 2023 and at the opening ceremony of the G.U. Pope monument in Prince Edward Island (PEI).
