I am honoured to share with you all that I have been elected the Ontario NDP candidate for Scarborough Centre in the upcoming June 2022 provincial election.
Firstly, I would like to thank the over 400 Scarborough Centre NDP members who gave me their support in this nomination contest. I’m very proud that with the help of a very organized and dedicated team of volunteers, we were able to connect thousands of people across Scarborough Centre, and turn out over 300 members to vote in support of my candidacy during this nomination contest. Thanks to their hard work, and the organizing work done by other candidates, we have made history this year as the largest NDP nomination race, with the best turnout in recent Scarborough history.
My sincere thanks to all the hard working volunteers and the engaged members for the honour of this decisive mandate as your official candidate for Scarborough Centre.
I’m proud that close to 350 members of our Scarborough Centre community, from young people to seniors and across all parts of the riding, joined our progressive movement with hope and excitement to support my candidacy and our mission to form an NDP government that truly represents the people of this community in 2022.
I am also aware of and deeply disappointed by attempts made to intimidate, profile, and question the legitimacy of some new members during this process. It is disappointing that these voter suppression attempts were conducted and supported by people in positions of power within our local riding association who were in a clear conflict of interest. New members, especially those who are from marginalized and BIPOC communities, far too often face hostility and exclusion when they try to make their voices heard and take part in the political process.
I am saddened by these tactics, but proud that attempts to disenfranchise these voters could not stop our community members and supporters from participating in this process. I promise to the members of our community who were subjected to this inexcusable treatment, that I will continue to work hard to make things better so that more new members can join our party and our movement.
I would like to congratulate and thank D Tyler Robinson on his campaign and organizing, and thank him for putting his name forward. I have always maintained that contested nominations are good for our movement, our party and for democracy as a whole.
I look forward to working together with all members of the Scarborough Centre and my fellow New Democrats across the city and the province to ensure that Doug Ford and his failed government are replaced by Andrea Horwath and a strong, progressive NDP government in June.
To make this happen, our work and focus have always been and will continue to be on the effort to unseat the current Conservative MPP in Scarborough Centre. The foundation for this effort is fully laid out through our first wave of organizing. I am confident, with all of your support, that we will be able to turn Scarborough Centre orange.
Please get in touch with me if you wish join our growing movement. Let’s put all of our energy and focus on achieving real results for our communities in Scarborough Centre and across Ontario.
